Job applicant attends interview, interviewer asks her no questions: 'I genuinely froze'

Some job interviews feel more like humiliation rituals.

The concept, to begin with, isn't exactly a very flattering one—it carries the expectation that an applicant will perform to put a tick in every check box, pretending that their main attraction to the role is something other than money. Even when it is a 'dream job' that they genuinely have a passion for, the fact that they have to prove it by jumping through the hoops of an employer can drain all the enthusiasm out of it pretty quickly.

Still, they are an important part of getting a job. It is a time for not only the applicant to state a strong case for why they are right for the role, but also for the company to show why they are worth working for. Although it can be annoying at times, it is a dialogue that needs to be had. It is always possible to be surprised by certain elements of a job or employee after starting, but a thorough interview helps to decrease the chances of that. It should be a place where professional curiosity is encouraged and explored to give both interviewer and interviewee a good idea about one another. While it doesn't have to involve eight different rounds and an aptitude test, it should be a dialogue.

  • A job applicant was taken aback when she went in for a second interview at a company with its co-founder after proceeding past an interview with HR. She had expected that this would be challenging and would go into some depth about whether or not she was suitable for the role.

    Instead, the interviewer asked her to introduce herself and explain both her professional and personal background. After that, she claimed that she had no more questions for her and that it was her turn to ask. Feeling confused, the applicant wasn't sure how to respond to this behavior. She didn't know what had caused it, nor what the outcome for the interview might be.

  • Mean-Device-6589 Asking about your family background is weird for an interview. These co-founder types can be like that. She's looking for your family background to contain something specific, and anyone who doesn't mention the unknown thing isn't getting considered.

  • Up VotieGirll This could just be me, but I always keep 'tell me about yourself' in interviews to my work history, I don't think I would have discussed my family background, especially since the question was was specifically about work. Maybe keep that in mind next time, but it is also odd and harsh to pin everything on one question.

  • ho4horus i had an interview like this, except they didn't even do the 'tell me about yourself' part, just showed me around the shop and asked if i had any questions they didn't need someone with my skill level, just a body to run a machine so i noped out

  • jackay27 You should have started grilling them for an hour straight. Ask them about their background and what qualifies them to be in their position. If they put you in an awkward position, flip the script and put them in an awkward. situation.

  • citrous ive been to interviews before where it's been pretty obvious that they already have an internal cadiate they want for the spot and they're just doing the interviews because its required they interview x amount of people. lots of canned questions, never asked me to elaborate on anything, overall very short and to the point.
